With the exception of Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, no Scottish city can boast such a wonderful local hill as Perth can. From the eastern suburbs, wooded slopes inch upwards to the summit of Kinnoull Hill. Topped by a stone tower folly, the southern side falls away almost vertically to the A90 dual carriageway below; add the cerulean hues of the River Tay (with places to eat on and around Tay Street) and the railway which follows it, and it makes a splendid, airy viewpoint from which to watch the natural and human world go by. After drinking your fill from this lookout, looping round to the north gives decent views north towards the Cairngorms from the descent. Residential streets take you back into the city.
