📌 Spittal of Glenshee, Perth & Kinross
★★

This pair of summits are the southernmost of a dense cluster of Munros between Glen Tilt and Glenshee Ski Centre in the southern Cairngorms. A long day is guaranteed no matter the approach used, but starting from Spittal of Glenshee makes use of estate tracks – and allows a circular route taking in two exquisite glens. Glas Tulaichean (grey-green hill) has a bulldozed track to within a few metres of the summit and can be reached fairly quickly, while Carn an Righ (king’s cairn) is a rocky dome with a more remote feel – and superb views over a vast swathe of the Cairngorms, including of the Lairig Ghru and Beinn a’ Ghlo.

📝 Key info

▶ 28 km / 17 mi | ▲ 1090 m | ⌛ 8-10 hr

Features: △ Glas Tulaichean (1051 m, Munro); △ Carn an Righ (1029 m, Munro); 💧 Loch nan Eun

Tough | Clear track all the way to Glas Tulaichean (except for signposted diversion around Dower House) & for return along Gleann Taitneach. Most of the rest of the route is on paths of varying quality – a few pathless sections including much of descent from Glas Tulaichean & on the rocky summit of Carn an Righ. Fording Allt Elrig on descent could be difficult after heavy rain / snowmelt. Some boggy sections in Glen Lochsie (if the old railway line is used) & around Loch nan Eun.

➡️ Clockwise circuit with extension to Carn an Righ: start – Dalmunzie Hotel – signposted diversion around south side of Dower House – Glenlochsie Lodge (by track along glen floor, or old railway line to avoid ford) – Glas Tulaichean – descend by north ridge to reach path along glen – Carn an Righ – return east, continuing to Loch nan Eun – Gleann Taitneach – cross to west bank at footbridge 1 mi north of Dalmunzie Hotel – start
