📌 Huisinis, Isle of Harris

Walk north around the coast from the best-known beach in North Harris and you’ll reach Tràigh Mheilein and Loch Crabhadail: a remote-feeling, wonderfully quiet landscape with further superb expanses of sand, water and fjord-like scenery, presided over by rugged, roadless hill ranges. From the early section of the route there are good views of the uninhabited island of Scarp, across a tidal strait. The island is famous for having some of its mail delivered by launching rockets from Harris in the 1930s (yes, really), but singed envelopes following unexpected explosions didn’t prove popular with the locals. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the idea never properly caught on.

Wildlife: Loads of rabbits, shags, gulls, oystercatchers, wheatears, meadow pipits, a few clegs. Highland cows on the approach road to the car park.
Weather: Cloudy with one short shower. Light winds, a humid-feeling 20°C.
