π Haroldswick, Isle of Unst, Shetland Isles

β
The Shetland Isles are closer in distance to Scandinavia than they are to the vast majority of the Scottish mainland, and formed part of the Kingdom of Norway between the 10th and 15th centuries. The most northerly island, Unst, was probably the first point in the North Atlantic where Vikings set foot on land, and thus has some of the strongest connections of all – illustrated by the island’s manifold Norse-derived place names. The Viking Unst Project aims to improve understanding of Norse settlement here, and centres on a replica 9th century longship (the Skidbladner) and longhouse overlooking Harold’s Wick on the east coast of the island. Both are open to explore at all hours, with free entry.
