Verdant Works – probably the most underrated visitor destination in Dundee? Perhaps it’s the mysterious name (simply the name of the old factory which the museum occupies, which used to be surrounded by green or “verdant” fields – if you were wondering), or maybe jute is a rather niche interest these days (a natural fibre used for weaving – if you were asking). Whatever the reason, this is an attraction which deserves to be much better known. A truly impressive array of large-scale exhibits and machinery tell the story of the material which made Dundee famous in the 19th century, housed in an original mill which used to employ 500 workers. By the end of the century the mill was closed down and repurposed as a recycling centre for jute waste materials; another century later, the museum was born and the din of working machinery now rings out again.
