The crowds of Loch Ness and its main tourist sites reach new heights around the village of Drumnadrochit. Just round the corner, Urquhart Castle is the only Historic Scotland attraction we’ve ever had to queue for besides Edinburgh Castle. The 13th century ruin is a true Scotland icon, romantically situated overlooking the loch with a bloody history owing to the Wars of Independence, when it alternated between Scottish and English hands. Crowds can spoil peak season visits, particularly during the afternoon, but visit at opening time (without dithering in the visitor centre, which you can look around at the end) and you could get the castle mostly to yourself at first (see our photos below).
