📌 Timsgearraidh, Isle of Lewis
★★★★

A small concrete bridge over a fish-filled tidal river forms the iconic view of Uig Sands, Lewis – which at low tide forms a vast expanse stretching from Tràigh nan Srùban and Timsgearraidh in the north to Ardroil and Abhainn Dearg Distillery in the south. Best known for being the discovery location of the Lewis Chessmen in 1831, the beach has a splendid backdrop featuring the lofty hills of Suaineabhal and its rough neighbours; there’s nowhere better to spend a sunny day. Parking is easiest on the Ardroil side, while those arriving by public transport could alternatively approach from Timsgearraidh. The half mile-or-so stroll between the two sides via the bridge is submerged at high tide, so avoid getting stranded on the wrong side: the trudge back around via the road is significantly longer!
