📌 Valtos, Isle of Lewis
★★★★

Tràigh na Beirigh is the giant among the three beaches north of Miavaig, the most popular, and probably the best – a fair amount is still there at high tide too. Though it sits behind a small campsite, the caravans and tents don’t really impact on the coastal strip, and a full mile of sand ensures it never gets busy. The beach lacks rock pools, but compensates with some beautiful washed-up clam shells; the brightness of the sand also helps to give the shallow sea a turquoise hue characteristic of the Caribbean, not Scotland. We also spotted a sea eagle over the extensive dunes. All-in-all, it’s a beguiling combination.
