π Broch on the Isle of Lismore, Argyll & Bute
β
β
Visitors planning to explore Tirefour Castle should be aware that this historic site is misleadingly named – it is in fact an equally interesting, iron age broch. This circular stone tower (now truncated) is one of hundreds found mostly around the islands and north mainland of Scotland, but only a handful have such superb views as this one, overlooking the Lynn of Lorn and much of western Lismore. The strategic location no doubt ensured its continued use over following centuries, and Viking ornaments have also been found inside.

π¬ From the verge parking it’s a 5-min uphill walk to the broch on a track & then across open hillside. Due to the small size of Lismore & the expense of bringing a vehicle onto the island, we recommend walking or cycling. For day trippers, the shortest route from the ferry jetty at Achnacroish is 2 mi (each way) on paths & across open hillside via Balnagown (⬀ Moderate). The ferry jetty at The Point is 3 mi (each way) on minor roads via Clachan (⬀ Easy). Alternatively, visit as part of our featured walk route.
