The Lighthouse is a literal beacon for Scottish design and architecture, found at the heart of Glasgow‘s grid-pattern central zone. Part tourist attraction, part events venue and part business space, there are a range of exhibitions and galleries spread across five storeys – though many parts of the building are off-limits or of little interest to the casual visitor. There is also a good exhibition about the city’s most famous architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, who also designed the former Glasgow Herald building which The Lighthouse now occupies. Perhaps the highlight is the octagonal Mackintosh Tower, with a long spiral staircase inside giving access to excellent views across the city from the top. If all those steps sound like too much, there is a second viewpoint with lift access.
