๐Ÿ“Œ Village on the Isle of Harris
โ˜…โ˜…

With a population of about 500 and a strategic position, Tarbert is an important metropolis by Harris standards – and the island’s capital. The Gaelic name translates as “strip of land”, and here it refers to the isthmus stopping South Harris from being cut adrift from North Harris: the distance between the east and west coasts here is only a few hundred metres. The vehicle ferry from Uig on Skye terminates here, so the village rapidly fills up with cars a couple of times each day before all becomes quiet again. Harris Tweed shops and a gleaming new distillery are the main points of interest for tourists – though carefully check the source of products in the former. These are some of the island’s only indoor attractions, so this is a useful place to be on a wet weather day. Hotel Hebrides pretty much monopolises the evening food scene, with comprehensive restaurant, bar and takeaway menus catering to most tastes; crucially, it’s also open on Sundays.
