📌 Old Town, City of Edinburgh
★★★★

The Surgeons’ Hall Museums on the south side of Edinburgh‘s Old Town have roots stretching back to 1505. This collection of bone and tissue specimens began life as a teaching resource for local medical students, finally opening to the public in 1832. Grisly bodily curiosities aren’t to every taste, but a major redevelopment in 2014 transformed the museum into a relatively major attraction, and I reckon it’s now one of the capital’s better museums. Galleries spread across four levels, encompassing the history of surgery, one of the UK’s biggest pathology collections, dental collection and a modern “body voyager” gallery exploring the use of robotics in surgery. Photography is not permitted.
