The middle of one of Dunfermline‘s main car parks is the last place you’d expect to find a pilgrimage site, but directly underneath the tarmac, there’s a surprise in store. 900 years ago, this was a wooded glen with a small cave in it. Queen Margaret came here to pray in 1070; after her death in 1093 she was beatified by Pope Innocent IV in recognition of her pious life and miracles. Today, steps and tunnels lead underground from the car park to reach this most unexpected of attractions.
