📌 North Berwick, East Lothian

This ruin on Kirk Ports in North Berwick is the middle of three incarnations of churches named after St Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint. Built in the mid-1600s, the body of the church is still largely intact (though roofless) along with its west tower, and is surrounded by a graveyard containing a monument to Covenanter John Blackadder, who died on the nearby island of Bass Rock after being imprisoned there in the 1680s. His name is given to the 1880s replacement church – St Andrew Blackadder – on St Andrew Street. The forerunner to both these buildings is found near the town harbour: this kirk was destroyed by a 1656 storm, and only the foundations survive today – along with the intact porch which now houses excavated stonework.
