Until the 1960s, South Queensferry was the departure point for boats connecting the south side of the Forth to Fife. After the road bridge opened the ferry ceased, but there are still regular boats departing from the village, for passengers only. These trips are the best ways to view the majestic and iconic Forth Rail Bridge up close, as well as the two road bridges. They also provide the link to Inchcolm Abbey: a ruined monastery on the small island of Inchcolm in the middle of the Firth of Forth. Other highlights to look out for from the boats are the concrete-covered islet of Inch Garvie, views of nearby Edinburgh and Arthur’s Seat, and seabirds (including puffins) during summer months.
