The contemporary branch of Scotland’s national art collection is housed in two grand buildings just across the Water of Leith from Edinburgh‘s New Town. “Modern One” occupies the neo-classical former John Watson’s Institution; works span the 20th and 21st centuries including works by Picasso, Warhol and many living artists. The curving grassy Landform feature in front of the building was designed by landscape architect Charles Jencks, whose work also features prominently at nearby Jupiter Artland. Across the road, “Modern Two” began life as an orphanage, later becoming the separate Dean Gallery before being subsumed under the National Gallery umbrella in 2012. The galleries are broadly free to visit but there is often a charge for specific exhibitions, especially in Modern Two.
