📌 Melrose, Scottish Borders
★
This stone commemorates Thomas the Rhymer – a 13th century prophet hailing from nearby Earlston. Amongst many other predictions, he is said to have claimed: “At Eildon Tree, if yon shall be, a brig ower Tweed yon there may see” – or in other words, a bridge would one day be visible from this point. In 1863, Leaderfoot Viaduct opened across the Tweed… just visible from the stone.
