πŸ“Œ Prestonpans, East Lothian

If you don’t like the “stuffy hall full of dusty exhibits” type of museum, Prestongrange will be a breath of fresh air – literally. It’s essentially the extensive, outdoor site of the former Prestongrange Colliery, close to Prestonpans and the Firth of Forth. Now understandably rusty in parts, the place is a fascinating reminder of the industrial revolution. There are several ways to explore the site: pay for a human-led tour, download a self-guided audio tour onto your mobile phone, or look out for the occasional signboard. The former method also allows exploration of the interiors of two buildings in addition to the visitor centre and exhibition space: the triple-storey Cornish beam engine house and an engine shed housing several locomotives and railway wagons.
