Perth Museum opened in spring 2024 as a brand new Fair City attraction, following a major refurbishment of the early-20th century town hall. A striking, wood-clad strongroom houses the Stone of Destiny (or Stone of Scone), used to crown Scottish, and then English and British monarchs, since the 13th century. Entry to this section is by pre-booked timeslot, accompanied by a couple of audiovisual presentations; I found the stone viewing process a little rigid and rushed. The overall visitor experience is very positive however, with well-designed displays about the city’s origins, development and the lives of the people who have lived here. Though the focus is mostly on Perth and Kinross, some of the exhibits also showcase collection items from elsewhere around the world. The interior of the building has been very attractively redesigned, and at the time of update in May 2025, the museum is also in the running for the Art Fund Museum of the Year award.
