📌 Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire

This tall, 13th century defensive mound is set amidst rolling countryside close to Lumphanan village, a few miles north of Deeside. It used to have a timber castle on top, with a moat surrounding the base. The castle fell to Edward I of England in 1296 and was abandoned soon afterwards – though a separate residence also stood here from 1480 to 1780. The Battle of Lumphanan took place nearby in 1057 and a stone commemorates the place where Macbeth died during the fighting. This all pre-dated the mound by a couple of centuries.
