πŸ“Œ Church in Chapeltown, Moray
β˜…β˜…

Tucked away in a little-visited corner of the northern Cairngorms, the Braes of Glenlivet are an area of gently rolling hills, fields and farmhouses. It’s certainly not where you would expect to find a large and beautifully decorated Roman Catholic church. However, it’s the region’s remoteness that helped Our Lady of Perpetual Succour flourish. Protected by natural topography from the advances of the Reformation, the glen retained its Catholic leaning – with the nearby Roman Catholic seminary (or priest training centre) at Scalan the only one in Scotland for much of the 18th century. After the seminary closed, the construction of a new, local place of worship was necessary to spare local residents a long and hazardous walk to the next church along. The building you see today is the second incarnation and is very grand indeed, particularly on the inside – well worth a detour from the more popular, lower part of the glen.
