Pierowall is the capital of Westray, and has all the amenities you’d expect for an island of its size. Like a shop. But perhaps the most interesting element is a substantial ruined tower house. Noltland Castle dates to the 16th century and is well defended by 71 gun holes. It was built for Gilbert Balfour: master of the household for Mary, Queen of Scots, and the Sherriff of Orkney.
