Popular since Victorian times, the Ness Islands form a leafy chain along the middle of the River Ness, just upstream from central Inverness. They make for a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, and are within easy walking distance of the city centre, following the Great Glen Way along the east bank of the river. Wide paths wind unhurriedly between tall trees, with sculptures backed by views of the fast-flowing waters. The westernmost and largest island – Whin Island – boasts a sizeable ornamental pond, playground and even a miniature railway.
