📌 Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries & Galloway
★★

This 18th century former cotton mill is the visitor hub for attractive Gatehouse of Fleet, overlooking the Water of Fleet close to the village centre. Set back from the main street, it’s easily missed by passing tourists but contains a fairly extensive local history exhibition spread across several spacious rooms, including a not-so-small-scale model of the town’s original layout as a planned settlement. The nearby Cairnsmore of Fleet nature reserve is also covered, along with Galloway’s long list of castles and famous local figures. There’s a café, gift shop and secondhand bookshop elsewhere in the cavernous building; all were nearly deserted on our recent summer visit, probably not helped by all the main doors being shut despite the centre being “open” for business!
