📌 Brae, Shetland Mainland
★★

A mile west of Brae, sinuous ocean inlets cut into the landmass of Shetland Mainland, reducing its width to under 100 metres. This neck of land is said to be the only place in the UK where you can toss a stone from the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea – though with a main road in between, attempting the feat isn’t recommended! Nevertheless, it’s a fine and easily accessible viewpoint, with a metallic Hollywood-style sign also welcoming visitors to Northmavine: the portion of Shetland Mainland to the north of this point. Vikings once carried longships over the isthmus to avoid the long alternative route by sea, while today, road signs warn of otters making the same overland journey to cross from one ocean to another.
