You can’t fail to spot the Renaissance façade of Mar’s Wark when staggering up the steep hill from Stirling city centre towards the castle. Indeed, a façade is all that remains, but it’s a good excuse to take a break from the climb! The 16th century townhouse was built by Stirling Castle‘s keeper, the Earl of Mar as his luxurious residence (look out for his coat of arms above the gate), and hosted celebrity guests including James VI before being used as a barracks for the 1715 Jacobite rebellion. Several fine architectural features are still visible, thought to be modelled on the castle’s palace.
