π Village in Fife

Lower Largo or Seatown of Largo (the prefixes added to distinguish it from the neighbouring village half a mile inland) is an attractive coastal village at the centre of the arc of Largo Bay in southern Fife, and the first in a succession of picturesque settlements stretching 20 miles to the Kingdom’s eastern tip. The village spreads quite widely but the most handsome spot is where the Hatton Burn meets the sea at a small rivermouth harbour, with red-tiled cottages huddling under the arches of the dismantled Fife Coast railway line. A half-decent beach (very extensive, but not particularly beautiful) runs all the way west to Leven and east to Ruddons Point near Earlsferry. Given the settlement’s name, we couldn’t possibly suggest rushing your visit; there should therefore be time to see the statue of Alexander Selkirk – inspiration for Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe – attached to the side of his birthplace further east along Main Street.
