๐Ÿ“Œ Village in Highland
โ˜…โ˜…

Anyone spending any length of time amongst the stark landscape of Assynt will surely end up calling at Lochinver before too long; for a start, it’s just about the only place with a shop. Rudely overlooked by the sudden domed summit of Suilven, the village is an important fishing base (apparently with Scotland’s second busiest harbour, though quiet on our visits) and the area around the docks has an unashamedly functional air. It gets more touristy as you head north towards the war memorial and the Culag River, with several gift shops, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes. One eatery surely stands head and shoulders above the rest by local reputation: Lochinver Larder crafts the best pies we’ve ever tasted, equally good taken away as eaten in-house. Judging by the queue often stretching out of the door there are many other fans, and the shop will even post pies to hungry customers anywhere in the UK! Meanwhile, Highland Stoneware pottery have a visitor centre just around the bay – worth a visit especially on a wet day.
