📌 Argyll & Bute / Stirling / West Dunbartonshire
★★★★

Immortalised in song and by national park literature, Loch Lomond is a destination for the masses rather than the intrepid. The dense web of ferries linking jetties and car parks has more in common with England’s Lake Windermere than any other Scottish loch, and the southern tip is only a dozen miles or so from Glasgow. Don’t let any of this put you off visiting: even the busiest spots along the A82 and at Balmaha are relatively peaceful in low season, and the hills on the west side in particular offer countless crowd-free views across what is the largest expanse of freshwater in Scotland. Heading north (either by the A82 on the west side or via a tough stage of the West Highland Way on the east bank), the transformation into dramatic, mountainous country as you drive north along the west bank is remarkable. Looking for something a bit different? Hop on a ferry to Inchcailloch: one of Loch Lomond’s 60 or so islands.
