📌 Lindisfarne, Northumberland
★★★

This diminutive castle perched on its rocky tower is the iconic view from Lindisfarne island, drawing the crowds during summer weekends and school holidays. Once a functional government garrison, Lindisfarne Castle was converted in the early 20th century into the comfortable yet quirkily isolated holiday home of Edward Hudson, who founded Country Life magazine. Also don’t miss the colourful Getrude Jekyll Garden (a few hundred metres north of the castle), or the well-preserved limekilns immediately to the east.
