Knock Castle sits on a minor rocky headland overlooking Knock Bay on the east side of Skye’s Sleat peninsula. Also known as Caisteal Chamuis (castle of the bay), the ruins of today’s keep were probably built by the MacDonald clan in the 15th century, replacing an earlier MacLeod building. This in turn replaced the iron age Dun Thorabhaig fort, which is still labelled on Ordnance Survey maps. The castle has been abandoned since the 1600s but a few vegetation-covered walls survive, complemented by excellent views along the coast. Access is via a short but complex walk from Torabhaig Distillery – see the detailed directions below.

π¬ From the distillery car park it’s a 10-min walk (each way) to the castle (⬀ Moderate). Walk a short distance back up the access road then turn sharply left onto a track downhill. Where the track bends sharply left (distillery warehouse under construction to left*), pass through a gate on the right and follow the field margin ahead to the shore. Turn briefly left along the shore before taking a faint path back inland (cottage on left), re-joining the earlier track. Keep right, crossing a burn before following the now clear path downstream on the far side. The castle is a little further beyond a grassy area.
*once warehouse construction complete, it will probably be possible to remain on the track, omitting the italicised section above
