📌 Kirkoswald, South Ayrshire

Culzean Castle is undeniably the star attraction in this part of Ayrshire, but the area around Kirkoswald village is also Robert Burns country. The ruined 13th century church of, err, Kirk Oswald next to the busy A77 road has an attractive graveyard where many of the poet’s family and friends are buried – and therefore, so too are many characters from his works. The church was built by the Cluniac monks of Paisley Abbey in tandem with nearby Crossraguel Abbey. The church font also comes from the abbey, and is thought to have been used to baptise Robert the Bruce.
