📌 Village in Dumfries & Galloway
★★
When is an island not an island? Answer: When it’s the Isle of Whithorn! Ages ago there was a proper island just off the Machars coast here, but a causeway was built in the 1800s linking it to the mainland. Houses sprung up on top, and today it forms the village’s main street, with no sign of the strait originally separating the two landmasses. The colourful village supplies the necessary basics for visiting tourists (and pilgrims visiting St Ninian’s Chapel), including a new post office and a popular pub, the Steam Packet Inn, serving fairly decent food. Combined with a central harbour and a good coastal jaunt to Burrow Head, it’s arguably the region’s second most interesting settlement after Wigtown.
