📌 Town in Aberdeenshire
★★
Huntly is a quietly attractive and sizeable town nestling in a broad hollow on the banks of the River Bogie (yes, really). There’s a neat central square with plenty of independent shops on the roads leading off it, with the northern one becoming a fine old avenue which leads to the grand ruin of Huntly Castle. Shortbread manufacturer Dean’s has a factory in the suburbs with a shop and bistro – though we’re more interested in the shortbread, which is probably our favourite of the Scottish brands. The large forested area to the northwest called The Bin is the only place in Scotland where, in fading light, we might just have seen a rare Scottish wildcat outside captivity – though chances of repeating that encounter are admittedly slim. Add in the excellent falconry centre nearby and Huntly makes a good choice for a varied day out.

🚶 The castle is an easy stroll from the town centre, but there’s not much else within walking distance; this isn’t an obvious base for those without a car.
🚆🚌 Huntly receives trains and coaches on the Aberdeen to Inverness transport routes, and there are a handful of other local buses.
