📌 Scots’ Gap, Northumberland
★★

The history of Herterton House Gardens is closely tied to that of the nearby, better-known National Trust property at Wallington. On a long-term lease from the trust, Frank (who used to look after the gardens at Wallington) and Marjorie Lawley have created a beautiful and tranquil garden divided into several areas, overlooked by a summerhouse and the 16th century farmhouse itself. The well-tended hedges, parterres and topiaries are worth a visit throughout the summer months, but the garden is at its colourful best in June (the photos below are from mid August).
