๐Ÿ“Œ Griais, Isle of Lewis
โ˜…

The Lewis Land Raider monuments commemorate men and women who raided estates across the Isle of Lewis in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in protest of unfair land ownership practices. There are three such memorials, with the other two at Aiginish (the Aiginish Farm Raiders Monument) and Baile Ailein (the Pairc Raiders Monument). This one at Griais / Gress overlooks Trร igh Ghriais, with an old road bridge over the Abhainn Ghriais also in view alongside its modern replacement. The striking monument is surrounded by earthworks supposed to evoke the WWI trenches that Griais residents may have fought in before returning to Lewis and being refused crofting land. The Griais raids took place in 1919 and eventually resulted in the division of local farms into fairer, elongated crofts, the boundaries of which can still clearly be seen on Ordnance Survey maps.
