Glengoyne Distillery has the peculiar quirk of straddling the Highland / Lowland whisky border: spirit is produced in the Highlands, but matures to become whisky in the Lowlands. The distillery catchphrase is “unhurried since 1833” – underscoring Glengoyne’s long history (starting out as Burnfoot Distillery) and the particularly slow distillation process – spirit takes longer to flow from the stills than anywhere else in Scotland. Found on the A81 main road and backed by the steep slopes of Dumgoyne, the location is both accessible and attractive; there’s even a small waterfall in the back garden. If tours are fully booked or you’re short on time or money, you can usually see a fair amount of the site by wandering around the external areas for free – including the garden and recently revamped visitor centre.
