Glenglassaugh Distillery is truly one on its own, compared with northeast Scotland’s other distilleries. The coastal location next to Sandend Bay is unusual for the region, perhaps lending a subtly salty note to the finished product. It straddles the boundary between the Speyside and Highland whisky regions, but often gets missed by visitors to either. The distillery was first established in 1875 with a useful local spring and barley supply, but was mothballed in the 1980s during a general downturn in Scotch whisky’s popularity. It reopened in 2008 and now makes a useful addition to Sandend‘s other attractions – and is easily combined with coast walks east or west from here.
