๐Ÿ“Œ Town in Dumfries & Galloway
โ˜…โ˜…

Gatehouse of Fleet sounds a bit like a place taken out of Game of Thrones: perhaps a frontier settlement on the edge of a great wilderness? The remote uplands of Galloway Forest Park rise to the north, with more fertile coastal lowlands to the south – so the comparison is at least partially accurate. The Water of Fleet bisects the town close to its tidal limit, with an 18th century inn or “gait house” built by the local Murray lairds next to a wooden bridge on the stagecoach route between Dumfries and Stranraer: hence the town’s name. Today’s village has a sleepy feel, with the main road rerouted via a southern bypass, but the High Street remains attractive, with prominent clock tower, a handful of independent shops and a few hotels. Start your visit at the informative Mill on the Fleet tourist centre; Cardoness Castle is also worth a look, a mile to the southwest.
