The Falls of Kirkaig are a spectacular – and somewhat off the beaten track – sight in the remote Assynt region south of Lochinver, requiring a scenic 4-mile round trip on foot to reach them. The River Kirkaig plunges nearly 20 metres into a rocky ravine and are especially impressive after heavy rain – though the river is a fairly powerful one in all but the driest of spells. We were lucky to watch fish attempting to leap the fall on our July visit – surely an insurmountable obstacle? The first photo below shows the falls themselves; the other pictures are of the approach path. The great domed summit of Suilven is well seen from the route; our full-day circuit to the hill passes the falls on the way back down.

π¬ From the car park it’s a 2 mi (1+ hr) walk (each way) to the waterfall on a clear but fairly rough path – following the north bank of the River Kirkaig upstream, usually at a distance. Fork right at a junction for the final descent to the waterfall which is steep & rocky – care required (⬀ Moderate).
