📌 Optical illusion near Dunure, South Ayrshire
★★

Amongst all of Scotland’s weird and wonderful places to visit, Electric Brae is surely one of the strangest of all. A quirk in the topography around the A719 south of Dunure means that when you round the corner and begin to “descend” into Craigencroy Glen, “down the road” is actually upwards, and up is down. The safe way to experience this is to approach from the north, pull into the signposted layby, come to a stop and apply the handbrake. Then check your mirrors and release the handbrake – remembering to brake again once you start rolling backwards! The name Electric Brae comes from the original belief that a strange electric or magnetic force pulls vehicles uphill here. In reality it’s just an optical illusion, but fascinating nevertheless.
