📌 Strathpeffer, Highland

This diminutive but finely carved Pictish symbol stone now found on the edge of Strathpeffer is known in Gaelic as the Clach an Tiompain, or Sounding Stone. The bottom half of one side is adorned with the unmistakable body of a bird of prey – perhaps a nod to the Munro clan which is represented by an eagle – with a horseshoe symbol further up. The visionary Brahan Seer once prophesised that Strath Peffer would be flooded if the stone fell over three times. It’s since toppled twice, and sea levels are on the rise thanks to global warming. Perhaps fortunately, it’s now firmly concreted down.
