πŸ“Œ Town in Scottish Borders
β˜…β˜…

Duns is one of the easternmost towns in the inland part of the Scottish Borders, sitting at the foot of Duns Law at a junction of several rural A-roads. A quirk of history made it the capital for the old county of Berwickshire, due to the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed ending up on the English side of the border from 1482 onwards. Racing driver Jim Clark spent much of his childhood in Duns, and the philosopher John Duns Scotius was born here: the latter figure’s unfashionable views about religion gave rise to the word “dunce”, which is also how the town’s name is pronounced. There’s nothing stupid about a visit here however: exploring the attractive market square, motorsport museum and nearby castle estate would fill a pleasant few hours, while the Edwardian masterpiece of Manderston House is only a couple of miles further east.
