Sweeping in a 2-mile arc between the Caithness villages of Dunnet and Castletown, Dunnet Bay is the northernmost beach of any significant size on the UK mainland. Extensive dunes behind the beach are an important wildlife habitat, which you can find out more about in the small but interesting visitor centre near the northern end of the bay. The beach is fully exposed to northwesterly winds, and with no land in this direction before Iceland or Greenland, is apparently a popular surfer’s destination.
