πŸ“Œ Duffus, Moray
β˜…β˜…β˜…

Once belonging to the Moray family, Duffus Castle has to be one of the most interesting castles in Scotland that’s still free to visit. The 12th century fortress is partially on a prominent motte but is gradually collapsing down the hillside, leading to a rather comical appearance. Built by Freskin de Moray in the early 1100s, it used to overlook the marshes surrounding Spynie Loch (now drained). Subsidence was already beginning to occur by the 1350s, and the entire castle was abandoned by 1700s when then-owner Lord Duffus moved to Duffus House instead.
