Though no longer technically a cathedral, Dornoch Cathedral remains the focal point for the small Sutherland town of Dornoch, as it has done since 1224. Founded as the centre for the Diocese of Caithness, the building burned down in 1570 during a clan feud and wasn’t fully rebuilt until the 1830s. The bare stone interior results from a 1920s remodelling, and is decorated with 27 fine stained glass windows. Madonna had her son christened here in 2000, and (in addition to weekly Sunday services) the building is no doubt a popular wedding venue. A couple of nearby buildings have also been part of the cathedral complex: the old parish manse (private), and the bishops’ residence – now the Dornoch Castle Hotel.
