📌 Blantyre, South Lanarkshire
★★★

On 19 March 1813, David Livingstone was born in Shuttle Row, Blantyre – a line of workers’ cottages attached to the Blantyre Mill Works on the River Clyde. Livingstone started work aged ten as a piecer at the mill, but went on to study medicine in Glasgow and then missionary training in London. 1841 saw him travel to South Africa as a medical missionary, and he was to become one of Europe’s most famous explorers of southern and central Africa. Back in Scotland, Shuttle Row has been transformed into a museum documenting his life and travels – most recently reopening to the public in 2021 following a multi-year renovation. I haven’t visited since these improvements, but look forward to seeing them soon!
