The striking ochre façade of Culross Palace stands pride of place in Culross centre, and is the most famous of a whole host of buildings preserved by the National Trust for Scotland around the village. The palace was built on the cusp of the 17th century by a Sir George Bruce – local laird and successful sea merchant – and will be instantly recognisable to Outlander fans. The building’s interior is inspired by the international trade overseen by its original owner, including Dutch roof and floor tiles and Baltic pine – though photos weren’t permitted on our tour. Scots Dumpy chickens fumble around in the colourful gardens at the rear, which rise in steep terraces to an excellent viewpoint for the Firth of Forth. In previous years, ticketholders can book onto guided tours of the rest of Culross for a small additional charge. These are highly recommended in a place which oozes history from every nook.
