Much of Crossraguel Abbey was under scaffolding at the time of our visit, but we saw enough to understand that this was once a grand building – and still an impressive ruin. The abbey was built by the Cluniac monks of Paisley Abbey in the early 13th century, and includes an impressive gatehouse and tower alongside the expected church. We’re hoping to visit again once Historic Environment Scotland have finished long term repair work.
