π Village in Argyll & Bute

Crinan doesn’t really fit the “wild Argyll” stereotype. A far cry from rough, rugged hills and remote forest (though there’s plenty of that nearby), the tiny village has a quietly refined feel as a result of the Crinan Canal, which enters the Sound of Jura here on the Atlantic side of its 9-mile journey. With a population of under 100 it’s unlikely to hold your attention for hours, but the sheltered canal basin is a lovely place to wander around on a sunny day, perhaps watching the odd boat navigate the locks on either side. Just along the coast to the west is a separate harbour with its own row of houses: less commercialised, and the launchpad for walks into the wooded terrain beyond.
